IS IT PRACTICAL?

Personally I cant think of any ways in which the Islamic veil can be practical. All its ever done is create negative images in non Muslims eyes about Islam and in particular about Muslim women. As if Islam doesnt have enough negative images as it is, Im sure Muslims could do without the constant attack on the status of women in Islam.

Ok now Im seriously trying to think of some ways in which the veil is practical, but I still cant! Maybe it gives women some dignity? But surely you can have dignity without covering your face? I mean look at this comic:

Maybe this comic is a bit extreme but of these women, who has the most dignity or who would you respect more? Muslims would probably say the one whos all covered up! But is dignity and respect really received by how many layers of clothing you wear? If one wears the veil in order to be closer to God then isnt that something spiritual? Something within you? So one who doesnt wear the veil can be close to God cant they?

Personally, when I see someone with their face covered, it makes me feel very uncomfortable. I mean whats the difference between a burglar wearing a balaclava with only his eyes showing and a woman wearing a veil and only her eyes showing?!! Some of you may be thinking that a bit extreme too but surely its the same thing is it not?

So back to whether its a practical thing, does anyone have any answers?

  1. This post is really thought provoking.
As a non Muslim myself I suppose I can be seen as an outsider when commenting on this issue however, that may be a good thing.

Admittedly I do feel quite intimidated so to speak by women with their whole face covered (exusing the eyes). I am not to sure why, I am guessing it's because I have been bought up in a predominantly white/Christian area and therefore, have been quite sheltered to the beliefs and behaviors of Islamic followers until I started college 4 years ago which highly diverse in culture and religion. My point I guess is that when people are unaware of why people do things it can become intimidating or uncomfortable.

However, now having studied Islam and interacting with many Islamic individuals I just feel sorry for the girls who wear these veils. I feel it is a shame to cover up one's God given beauty. In addition I do question whether women are oppressed into wearing them which makeas me feel more sympathetic. We will never know if this is the case as they would feel to scared to admit it.

To round it up I must agree with yourself that there are no practicalities of wearing the veil, not any that I can think of anyway.

  2. It is this intimidation which leads to segregation amongst a lot of commuinities. Now Im not blaming the veil for segregation in Britain but would someone who feels intimidated by a person be willing to communicate with such a person? I personally wouldnt!
And like you say, this is Gods beauty, so why cover or be ashamed of something God Himself has created?!

  3. It's not a case of shame but of an appropiate setting for the display of what God has given us. Imagine some one who is intelligent. If that person used her intelligence in an inappropiate setting wouldnt we criticise that person?

As for being practical...well if a person is religious then its not just about whether its practical but whether the religion requires it.

I would be as scared of a burgler whose face I could see as of one who I couldnt. The issue is all about context....
